Synopsis
Rosie and Alex have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn't possibly be right for one another...or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies. One awkward turn at 18, one missed opportunity...and life sends them hurtling in different directions. But somehow, across time, space and different continents, the tie that binds them cannot be undone. Will they find their way back to one another, or will it be too late?
Review
Based on the novel 'Where Rainbows End' by Cecelia Ahern, 'Love, Rosie' is a bittersweet tablet to swallow. Beneath its veil of well-commercialised rom-com lies a realistically tragic story of how life has taken its toll on a pair of star-crossed lovers. Rosie, the protagonist that was so well played by the gorgeous Lily Collins, is a real-life example of a prom night gone wrong. Alex, played by the ever charming Sam Claflin, on the other hand, delivers solid chemistry with Collins. Persuasive performances aside, theme of melancholy is subtle, as though life itself is a tragic joke thrown here and there within the plot. Although the element of comedy is abundant, such format is rendered to be an irony itself since life is already a nasty piece of work deemed laughable (and endurable..) for both protagonists. Thankfully, the film works its charm away without ignoring the usual formulaic rote of rom-com. As guilty as it might sound, this is definitely one of my favourites off the genre this year.
